Just Because I Like Them. Enjoy.
From Tom Jones. Who knew Albert Finney was so amazingly beautiful in the early 60’s? Incredible actor.
One of the finest scenes from Tampopo – a stunning, poignant, and hilarious Japanese film all about food — and the society that surrounds it.
Seems a more than a bit kitschy now, but Like Water For Chocolate was one of the hottest movies we ever got to watch in high school.
A thoroughly bizarre film, Beetlejuice scared the crap out of me – and though I did enjoy watching it – I think I would close my eyes or run out of the room during certain bits. This was certainly one of them. Even though I knew it was coming.
Yes, it’s dubbed in French (gotta love the French and their inability/unwillingness to accept subtitles – kidding – kind of…), but this is the only video I could find online of this scene. I won’t write the title for fear it will be taken down. But you gotta love: “Oh, dessert! Cerveau de singe au sorbet!” My friends and I would watch this scene over and over again. That and the scene where the guy takes the other guy’s heart out, still beating.
Tom Ford – so visceral and creepy, eating AT each other… yet the most disturbing image may be at 1:33, where her otherwise shellfish covered hand rests against her cheek. HOT. The eating is also so intense juxtaposed with the silliness of their little chase. From the turkey leg to snogging with no flossing, let alone a mint or something… beh.
Tampopo – I feel like my latent American puritanism inhibits me from being into this scene, and by scene, I mean the practice of passing an egg yolk back and forth, not the scene from the film. I hadn’t seen either of these two films so far, and now I will make sure to. (FYI, after the youtube video plays the next title under the auto-generated “Up Next” is a video called Hot Young Russian Girl in Moscow… the internet’s so lovely.)
Like Water for Chocolate – Cute!
Beetlejuice – Some of Tim Burton”s best work, I love that you have it amongst these films. Sexy, sexy, sexy… and then one that’s just nutty.
Indiana Jones – Much better in French.
I absolutely adore that you commented on each film! Tom Ford is a genius. This film was the big Oscar movie that year, did you know that? There’s a legendary hunting scene, horses, dogs, ladies on sidesaddle, etc. You really need to see it. Amazingly enough, it follows the book quite closely – an 800 page book. Like Huck Finn but with lots of sex and in the 18th century. One of the first modern novels.
You MUST see Tampopo. It’s food is the main point of the movie – well, a tool to examine Japanese culture – but it’s seriously the main character. And there are sexier scenes – creepy sexy – involving live seafood.
LWFC – it is cute, but now that I hunted this scene down again, I realized how cheesy/dated the film became. The book was incredible.
Tim Burton – another genius, yes.
Indiana Jones in French – hilarious! I’m trying to brush up, so maybe I should go online and find American films dubbed into French…
I’d been thinking of writing a general response, but had a hard time as the film clips are all singularly unique with the effect being created… I mean, there’s clearly a food-sex continuum in play in the first three, but that sexual vibe is much different between them.
I’m a bit silly for having said ‘Tom Ford’ instead of ‘Tom Jones’! (I must have been thinking of an upcoming post I am working on, where I talk about the fashion designer slash movie director…) Tom JONES is the film in question here, and I will definitely check it out after watching this zany scene. I’ve only known Albert Finney as an older gentleman and enjoyed his work in (connecting back to your five chosen films!) Tim Burton’s ‘Big Fish’.
After the egg bit, Tampopo went on my Netflix queue and I will hopefully catch it soon! I haven’t read LWFC, so perhaps I will check it out from the public library. The movie does seem a bit dated, but you’re absolutely correct in it being the hottest thing we got to watch in language class.
Tim Burton — amazing all around, even though I will say that I prefer the days of Beetlejuice to some of his newer films. A little less comic book and more macabre. If you haven’t seen the film ‘Ed Wood’ I would recommend it highly.
You’d be surprised how many American films are better once dubbed into French. Take care!
So it was Tony Richardson who directed Tom Jones – knew it was someone very familiar. He was the husband (ex) of Vanessa Redgrave and the father of Natasha and Joely Richardson. HE was an extraordinary director.
I saw Ed Wood a long time ago, but I do need to check it out. Films are so different when you see them as an adult. Beetlejuice scared me to death, really and truly.
Take care!
You’re a bit of a sexy food scene yourself Irene!
What about 9 and a half weeks?
Maybe make it onto your list?
Why thank you.
Honestly, I hadn’t seen the film. Not a real food film, is it? But here is the scene for any readers who are interested. It’s really really something.
